They like to be in charge of the pack, and their long history of hunting and energized patrolling through villages and towns can be read about in George Washington’s letters and notes regarding these small terrier dogs. Generally, anyone familiar with the breed would describe them as sleek, muscular, and compact dogs. As far as weight goes, they sit somewhere within the 15- 30 pound range. In terms of size, they usually range from 10 to 18 in (45 cm) tall. They'll follow somebody with a backbone but may challenge a master if he doesn't show much authority over the animal. Feists are generally small to medium-sized dogs. Not nearly as aggressive as their look-alikes- the Jack Russell Terrier- these dogs do exceptionally well when their owner shows confidence and leadership. These dogs make for amazing pets as well, due to their great temperament.

Not only do they make for excellent hunters, but they've also been turned into very great scouts over long years of training, instinct, and generations of knowledge and practice. They're immaculate at hunting small animals, with their small and agile bodies and boundless energy. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln both wrote of these fierce hunters, as well as their natural ability to tree small game and chase down birds.
